英検1級2次試験:Agree or disagree: Zoos do more harm than good

Agree or disagree: Zoos do more harm than good

(賛成か反対か:動物園は有害無益である)

I disagree with the opinion that zoos do more harm than good. Zoos provide us with various kinds of values in our society. To explain my opinion, I have two reasons.

First, they have economical values. A lot of people visit zoos to see rare animals or plants that we don’t often see in our daily lives. For example, when a giant panda arrived at Ueno Zoo in 2017, it is said that the annual number of visitors increased significantly, and the number is estimated to be around 4 million. Those people spent large amount of money in Tokyo metropolitan area, boosting the local economy.

Second, they also have educational value. In general, zoos import rare animals or plants from outside of countries. Because of this, visitors can deepen their understandings about ecological systems of the planet or the fact about endangered species. From this kind of experience, people will have more respect for the environment.

From these two reasons, I believe that the advantages of zoos outweigh disadvantages. (169 words)
