I’m of the opinion that teachers should be responsible for parenting their students as well as teaching lessons.

I have two reasons to support my opinion.

First, parents nowadays don’t enough time to educate their children. According to one survey, it’s estimated that it costs around 10 million yen to raise one child until the graduation of university. This means that parents need to work for long periods of time, and they can’t have time to pay attention to their children. Under the circumstance, schoolteachers should pick up the slack in parenting.

Second, teachers can effectively develop their student’s discipline. One of the reasons for it is that needless to say, teachers have “license” to educate their students. Another reason is that school’s environment is suitable for students to learn about moral lessons. For example, in Japan, students need to prepare for lunch or clean their classroom by themselves. These kinds of activities that nurture student’s cooperative spirit often enable schoolteachers to teach the importance of moral values.
