Is there too much emphasis on materialism in modern society?

I’m of the opinion that there is too much emphasis on materialism in modern society. Too many people still believe that possessing a lot of money or luxury things makes them happy even if we can feel happiness without them.
I have two examples to support my opinion.
First, the number of crimes like fraud is increasing because of materialism. Society is teaching people that nothing is more important than money. This results in a situation where people are willing to do horrible things just to make money.
Second, too many people believe that they can be happy by making themselves look bigger than they actually are. As time goes by, we’re able to feel happiness by spending less and less money. However, there are too many people who wish to purchase luxury things such as expensive cars, jewelry even if they don’t earn a lot of money. Most of them say “These goods can be status for them.”.
In conclusion, I believe that society is putting too much emphasis on materialism today. (173 words)

ちなみに、"materialism"の単語の意味が少し難しめですね。
