英検1級2次試験:Should all citizens be required to vote by law?

Should all citizens be required to vote by law?

(法律ですべての国民の投票を義務付けるべきか?)

I strongly agree with the idea that voting should be mandatory.

I have two reasons to support my opinion.

First, without doing so, political policies would be biased toward certain generation. As we know, in Japan, we are currently allowed to choose whether we go voting or not. According to recent survey, more than 70% of elderly citizens go voting. On the other hand, less than 40% of younger generation do so. As a result of these numbers, politicians often make policies that prioritize older generation. I think this is against the principle of democracy.

Second, it has educational value. By making voting one of the requirements for citizens, students will have more opportunities to gain knowledge and exchange their idea about politics. Politics are directly related to our society. The more opportunities students need to think about the issue, the more social problems they will be able to solve in the future.

To sum up, I believe that all citizens should be required to vote by law. (168 words)
